Understanding Psychological Safety and Its Role in Team Connection

Psychological safety is defined as a shared belief that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking. It is the sense that you can speak up, offer ideas, and make mistakes without fear of punishment or humiliation. This concept gained prominence when Google’s Aristotle Project, in 2012, studied 37,000 employees across 170 teams and found that psychological safety was the most critical factor in determining successful teams.

Implications for the Future of Work and Leadership

The findings from Google’s research have profound implications for the future of work and leadership. In my 20 years of experience in the legal recruiting field and more recently with OptiMatch at Om.app, we have consistently observed that psychological safety is crucial for the teams we work with. When team members feel psychologically safe, they are more likely to engage, collaborate, and innovate, leading to higher productivity and effectiveness.

Fostering Greater Psychological Safety

At OptiMatch, we have found that understanding and aligning motivational factors among team members are essential in creating psychologically safe environments. When individual motivators are aligned, it fosters natural affinity and trust, enhancing psychological safety and, consequently, team coherence and productivity.

Three Ways to Create Greater Psychological Safety in Your Teams

  1. Encourage Open Communication: Create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas without fear of retribution.
  2. Align Motivational Factors: Understand what drives each team member and align these motivators to foster a sense of connection and mutual respect.
  3. Promote Inclusivity and Respect: Ensure that all team members feel valued and respected, which helps in building trust and a sense of belonging.

Psychological safety is not just a nice-to-have but a fundamental component of high-performing teams. By prioritizing it, leaders can create environments where innovation and collaboration thrive.
